Resistance to the instrumentalization of our faith by the far right

The Christian Democracy Movement, with the self-sacrificing struggle of Nikos Psaroudakis and its members, deconstructed the junta narrative on the basis of the Scriptures and Christian teaching.
The fall of the dictatorship, which was completed as if at dawn today with the swearing-in of the political government of national unity, also marked the end of the exile of Nikos Psaroudakis, who returned from Gyaros, and the re-circulation of “Christianiki” on July 27, 1974, which continues to this day.

The anti-dictatorial struggle is a natural consequence and continuation of the struggle of Christian Democracy since its foundation to expose the instrumentalization of our faith by the ruling class, with the transformation of Christian teaching into a harmless individual ethic that turns a blind eye to social injustice and tyranny, with its transformation into an ideological apologist for the post-civil war state. “Capitalist Christianity”, as Nikos Psaroudakis called it.

The term “instrumentalization” is a neologism. It is the act by which we transform something – such as an idea, an institution, or even a human group – into a tool to achieve another, usually selfish or foreign to its essence, purpose. If the word is new, the practice it describes is old.

The Junta that constituted the natural evolution of the authoritarian pathologies of the post-civil war state had invested in the instrumentalization of the Christian faith and came into a particularly uncomfortable and difficult position, receiving criticism from a Christian perspective.

The anti-dictatorial struggle of the Christian Democracy Movement had a special weight, because the dictatorial regime appeared as the “guardian” of the Christian faith against the “communist danger”, with the slogan “Greece of Greek Christians” as its peak manifestation. The Christian Democracy Movement, with the self-sacrificing struggle of Nikos Psaroudakis and its members deconstructed the junta narrative on the basis of the Scriptures and Christian teaching.

If for harmless systemic Christianity, Democracy was a “detail” without significance, since it willingly supported the tyrannical regime, the same was not true of the Christian Democrats, who had already formed themselves within the framework of the Movement as democrats by conviction and from the first moment joined the anti-dictatorial struggle. Democracy, and the incompatibility of Christian teaching with any form of tyranny, was from the very beginning a fundamental position and attitude of life for the leaders of the Movement in the decades of the 1950s and 1960s.

The anti-dictatorship struggle began on the very day of the imposition of the dictatorship with the participation of the late Manolis Miliarakis and Fr. Christos Christodoulou in the anti-dictatorship rally in Heraklion, Crete.

The first resistance text was the book “Criticism of the Constitution in the Light of Christianity in 1968”, which does not stop at criticizing tyranny and the suppression of democratic freedoms, but with unprecedented courage under a dictatorial regime, highlights the social injustice of the bourgeois regime in general.

Since January 1970, with the re-circulation of the newspaper under the title “Christianiki”, following the lifting of preventive censorship, but also of the resistance publication “Charavgi (Dawn)” for a while. The newspaper escalated its anti-dictatorial discourse, supported the student movement and the Polytechnic uprising, denounced the Junta’s attempt to legitimize itself politically through so-called “liberalization”. It warned of the dangers of the Junta’s methods in Cyprus, which led to the Cypriot tragedy.

After the closure of the newspaper in December 1973 and the exile of Nikos Psaroudakis, the Christian Democrats abroad published the resistance publication “New Horizons” until July 1974.

“They forced organizations and parties to become more militant in their stance”

The subscriber and friend of the newspaper Dimitris Konstantakopoulos in Our event at ESIEA last May also highlighted the -unrecognized but equally important- role that the Movement and its newspaper played in the most complete possible functioning of Democracy in our country during the first period after the fall of the dictatorship:

“Three people played during that period, July and August 1974, the most crucial role in the crystallization of the national democratic consciousness of the Greek people. They played it thanks to their integrity, courage and judgment, daring to question both the “bridge-building” (with the junta) dispositions of the government of the so-called “national unity” and the “dissonance” and fear of the traditional leftists. They were Louis Danos, Marios Ploritis and Nikos Psaroudakis.

Although they were not rewarded politically or electorally, these three personalities, both with what they wrote and with their shining integrity and courage , raised the bar of the demands of the Greek people, formulated and crystallized the first democratic demands, making it difficult for the ruling Right to “normalize” and “appease” the anti-junta sentiments, and forced the various organizations and parties to become more militant in their stance”.

If on such days in 1974 Nikos Psaroudakis returned from the exile of Gyaros, on such days again, two years later and fifty years ago, on June 30, 1976, he crossed the threshold of Korydallos prison, convicted of “insulting authority.” The article on “Continuous Crime” that led to his conviction and imprisonment, after he refused to redeem the four-month sentence in protest and as an act of resistance, was the culmination of the struggle of the first post-dictatorship period for the complete functioning of the Republic and the abolition of the authoritarian remnants of the dictatorship and the post-civil war state.

As he emphasizes in closing his speech:

“The legacy of ideas and the example of Psaroudakis’s attitude allow even today the newspaper he founded to remain a bastion of critical thought in a period of universal decline and decomposition of the culture and democratic ideology of the Greeks, and indeed regardless of whether someone has or what religious faith they have, which is no small feat. It deserves our undivided support”.
